What Does It Mean to Be “On the Spectrum”?

Priya Anand

PsyD, BCBA

Priya found her way into ABA through developmental psychology, and she's spent the last 13 years focused on the earliest years.

Being “on the spectrum” refers to having Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how an individual experiences and interacts with the world. The term “spectrum” highlights the wide range of abilities and challenges people with autism may have.

Each person with autism experiences the condition differently. Some individuals may have high-functioning autism and excel academically or professionally, while others may face more significant challenges in communication, social interaction, and daily tasks. Regardless of where they fall on the spectrum, individuals with autism share some common traits, such as difficulty with social cues, sensory sensitivities, and rigid thinking.

The key to supporting someone on the spectrum is understanding that each individual has a unique combination of strengths and areas for growth. Early interventions, such as ABA therapy, can help individuals with autism develop essential skills, improve communication, and navigate everyday situations.

At Steady Strides ABA, we offer personalized ABA therapy in Texas and New Mexico, helping individuals on the spectrum thrive and achieve their full potential.
