Can Autism Be Diagnosed Before Age 2?

Yes, autism can be diagnosed before age 2, sometimes as early as 18 months. Early signs may include limited eye contact, delayed speech, lack of response to name, or minimal social interaction. While every child develops at their own pace, noticeable delays in communication and social engagement may prompt concern.

Pediatricians typically perform developmental screenings at well-child visits. If red flags are present, they may refer families to a specialist for a comprehensive evaluation. Tools like the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) are often used to assess risk. A diagnosis before age 2 allows for earlier intervention, which research shows can significantly improve long-term outcomes.

Early ABA therapy helps build communication, play, and social skills during a critical period of brain development. So, even if you’re unsure, getting your child evaluated is a proactive step.
