What Are Common Behaviors of Autism?

Maria Delgado

MEd, BCBA

Twelve years of parent training has taught Maria one thing: families don't need more pamphlets, they need someone who actually gets it.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects individuals differently, but there are common behaviors that families and professionals often notice. These include social communication challenges, such as difficulty maintaining eye contact, understanding nonverbal cues, or engaging in back‑and‑forth conversations.

Many individuals with autism also display repetitive behaviors, like hand‑flapping, lining up objects, or repeating words and phrases. These actions can provide comfort or help manage overwhelming situations. Sensory sensitivities are another hallmark, where everyday sounds, lights, or textures may feel intense or distressing.

It’s important to remember that these behaviors are not “bad.” They are ways individuals with autism experience and respond to the world. With the right support, children and adults can learn strategies to manage challenges while building on their strengths.

Evidence‑based interventions, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), help improve communication, social skills, and independence by tailoring therapy to each person’s unique needs.

At Steady Strides ABA, we serve families, and we provide compassionate, individualized ABA therapy in Texas that is designed to empower children and adults with autism.
