What Is Borderline Autism in Adults?

Priya Anand

PsyD, BCBA

Priya found her way into ABA through developmental psychology, and she's spent the last 13 years focused on the earliest years.

“Borderline autism” is not an official medical diagnosis, but the term is often used to describe adults who show mild or partial traits of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These individuals may experience challenges with social communication, sensory sensitivities, or repetitive behaviors, yet their symptoms may not fully meet the criteria for a formal ASD diagnosis.

Adults with borderline autism often find daily interactions more difficult than expected, such as maintaining eye contact, managing workplace communication, or coping with sensory overload. Because these traits can overlap with conditions like ADHD or social anxiety, professional evaluation is essential to understand the root cause and determine the right support.

The good news is that evidence‑based therapies, including Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), can help adults strengthen communication, build coping strategies, and improve independence. Early recognition and tailored intervention make a significant difference in quality of life.

At Steady Strides ABA, we serve families, and we provide compassionate, individualized ABA therapy in Texas and Mexico that supports both children and adults.
