How to Keep Autistic Kids Busy?

Priya Anand

PsyD, BCBA

Priya found her way into ABA through developmental psychology, and she's spent the last 13 years focused on the earliest years.

Keeping autistic kids engaged requires structure, creativity, and activities that match their interests and sensory needs. The key is to offer purposeful play that supports learning and emotional regulation.

Start with visual schedules to provide predictability. Break the day into short, manageable activities like puzzles, matching games, or sensory bins. These not only keep kids busy but also build focus and fine motor skills.

Sensory play, like water tables, kinetic sand, or textured crafts can be calming and stimulating. For movement, try indoor obstacle courses, yoga, or trampoline time to release energy and improve coordination.

Interactive learning apps, story time, and music sessions can also support communication and cognitive development. Rotate activities to maintain interest and reduce overstimulation.

Most importantly, follow your child’s lead. Observe what they enjoy and build routines around those strengths.

At Steady Strides ABA, we help families, and engage routines through personalized ABA therapy in Texas and Mexico. Our programs are designed to build independence, reduce stress, and support your child’s growth.
