Why Is Parent Training Required in ABA?

Rebecca Hollister

PhD, BCBA-D

Seventeen years in ABA has shaped Rebecca's philosophy: good therapy isn't just about data — it's about dignity.

Parent training is a required part of ABA therapy because progress doesn’t stop when a session ends. Children learn best when the same strategies are used consistently at home, in school, and in the community.

ABA therapists work with your child for a limited number of hours each week, but parents are with their child every day. Parent training teaches you how to respond to behaviors, reinforce communication, and support skill development in real-life situations. This consistency helps your child generalize what they learn in therapy and use those skills across different environments.

Training also empowers parents. You gain practical tools to manage challenging behaviors, support routines, and encourage independence with confidence. Instead of feeling unsure about how to handle difficult moments, you learn evidence-based techniques that are proven to work.

Most importantly, parent involvement speeds up progress. When parents and therapists work as a team, goals are reached more effectively and long-term outcomes improve.

At Steady Strides ABA, parent training is a core part of our ABA therapy in Texas model. We partner with families to make sure skills learned in sessions carry over into everyday life.
