What Parents Can Expect in Their Child’s First Month of ABA?

Priya Anand

PsyD, BCBA

Priya found her way into ABA through developmental psychology, and she's spent the last 13 years focused on the earliest years.

Starting ABA therapy is an important milestone, and many parents wonder what the first month will look like.

In the first few weeks, the focus is on building trust and understanding your child. Your ABA team will spend time observing, pairing with your child, and learning what motivates them. This helps create a positive relationship and a comfortable learning environment.

You can also expect assessments and goal setting. The BCBA will evaluate your child’s communication, social, and daily living skills, then create an individualized treatment plan. Sessions may feel structured but playful, with activities designed to teach through natural interaction.

Consistency is key during this stage. Your child may test boundaries or show changes in behavior as they adjust to new routines, which is completely normal. Parents are often included through regular updates and parent training, so you understand strategies being used and how to support progress at home.

By the end of the first month, you’ll start seeing clearer routines, stronger engagement, and the foundation for meaningful skill development.
