Do All Levels of Autism Benefit from ABA Therapy?

Priya Anand

PsyD, BCBA

Priya found her way into ABA through developmental psychology, and she's spent the last 13 years focused on the earliest years.

If your child has recently been diagnosed with autism, you may be wondering: Does my child’s level of autism determine if they need ABA therapy?

The truth is, ABA therapy can help children across all levels of autism — from mild to severe. What matters most is not just the “level,” but your child’s unique needs and goals.

Autism is often described in three levels:

  • Level 1: Needs some support.
  • Level 2: Needs substantial support.
  • Level 3: Needs very substantial support.

While these categories provide a general guide, every child’s experience is different. Some kids with Level 1 autism may struggle with social skills and benefit greatly from ABA. Others with Level 3 autism may use ABA to build communication, self-care, or safety skills.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from ABA

Instead of focusing only on the autism diagnosis level, ask yourself:

  • Does my child need help with communication?
  • Do they have frequent meltdowns or challenging behaviors?
  • Do they struggle with daily living skills, like eating or dressing?
  • Could they use support in social interactions?

If you answered yes to any of these, ABA could be a helpful tool — no matter what level of autism your child has.

At Steady Strides ABA, our programs are tailored to meet each child’s needs. Families can choose from home-based ABA, school-based ABA therapy, or center-based ABA

We also provide autism assessments and ABA parent training to empower families in Texas and New Mexico.
