What Happens if ABA Therapy Is Stopped Too Early?

Priya Anand

PsyD, BCBA

Priya found her way into ABA through developmental psychology, and she's spent the last 13 years focused on the earliest years.

ABA therapy is most effective when delivered consistently over time. Stopping too early can interrupt progress and limit skill development. Children may lose momentum in learning communication, social, or daily living skills, making it harder to generalize behaviors across settings. In some cases, regression may occur, where previously learned skills fade without reinforcement.

Early termination can also reduce the opportunity for parents and caregivers to fully understand strategies that support long-term success. ABA therapy is designed to build gradually, with goals tailored to each child’s needs. Cutting the process short often means those goals remain incomplete, leaving families without the tools to manage challenges effectively.

Consistency is key. Ongoing sessions allow therapists to adjust interventions, track progress, and ensure children continue to grow in confidence and independence.
