What Are the Signs of Autism in a 4-Year-Old?

Priya Anand

PsyD, BCBA

Priya found her way into ABA through developmental psychology, and she's spent the last 13 years focused on the earliest years.

At age 4, early signs of autism may become more noticeable as social and communication expectations grow. Common signs to look for in a 4-year-old include:

  1. Language Delays: Difficulty speaking in sentences or engaging in back-and-forth conversations. They may have limited vocabulary or use repetitive phrases.

  2. Difficulty with Social Interaction: Challenges with making eye contact, engaging in pretend play, or understanding social cues like taking turns.

  3. Repetitive Behaviors: Engaging in repetitive movements, such as hand-flapping or rocking, or becoming fixated on specific interests or routines.

  4. Sensory Sensitivities: Being overly sensitive to certain textures, sounds, or lights, or showing a lack of response to pain.

  5. Rigidity: Difficulty adapting to changes in routine or environment, becoming upset when things don’t go as expected.

Early identification is crucial, as it allows for early intervention through therapies like Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), which can improve communication, social skills, and behavior.
